Dr. Kama Cannon, MS Social Studies
My name is Kama Cannon and I look forward to joining The Basilica School as your new MS History and Geography teacher. As a K-12 Gifted Education Specialist and Professor of Education, I have served students of all ages; middle school is my favorite! I believe the construction of knowledge depends upon students engaging with an idea or experience, and also wrestling with the tricky how and why questions as they determine its value or relatedness to their lives through their individual lenses. In my classes, I provide time for sharing, thinking, and reflection, and I guide my students as they develop understandings of themselves and their academic, social, and emotional growth.
I completed my Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction in 2020; my Master in Teaching Middle Grades Social Studies and Academically and Intellectually Gifted Graduate Certificate in 2011; and my Bachelor of Arts in Geography, with a minor in Anthropology in 2008—all at University of North Carolina Wilmington. In 2016, I founded DiveN2Life, a non-profit educational organization which utilizes scientific research diving and ocean stewardship projects to engage young adolescents in place-based STEM. When I am not under water with the dive kids, I am exploring America’s National Parks with my husband Richard and our Spanish Water Dog, Mia Mae.
