Technology Use & Parent Engagement
We are implementing a new classroom-based iPad system:

Students will no longer be assigned a 1:1 device. Therefore, there will be no need to purchase or bring personal iPad cases.
Each classroom will be equipped with charging stations and assigned iPads for in-class use.
Device use will be monitored, and personal entertainment (games/music) will not be permitted during school hours.

To support continued learning at home, students will need access to a personal device and internet. This approach aims to strengthen collaboration between students and parents as they manage assignments and track academic progress. If your family experiences a financial hardship or lacks internet access, please contact the school so we can assist with a solution.

Academic Policy Updates
We are raising expectations for academic responsibility and accountability through the following updated policies:

Grading Symbols

Blank – Not Yet Graded
EX – Excused
M – Missing (may still be submitted)
IC – Incomplete (earned a zero; no longer accepted)

Make-Up Work from Absence

Students have 3 school days to submit assignments after returning from an absence. Example: Student was absent Monday. Missed work assigned on that Monday is due NLT Thursday.
For extended absences, students are granted an additional 2 days per day missed, up to a maximum of 14 calendar days to submit all make-up work. Example: If student was absent Monday and Tuesday, the work would be due NLT Tuesday of the following week.
It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate with teachers and catch up on missed assignments within the allowed timeframe.

Late Work (Not Related to Absence)

Late work refers to assignments that are not turned in on time and are not due to an absence.
Students may submit late work up to 3 school days past the original due date for partial credit.
After 3 days, the assignment will receive an Incomplete (IC) and will no longer be accepted.
This distinction ensures fairness while encouraging timely responsibility and communication.

Athletic – Academic Eligibility

A student earning an F in any class will be ineligible to participate in athletics until the grade improves.
Eligibility may be reinstated 3 school days after the grade is raised.

Disenrollment Policy

Students who earn three or more final grades of F at the end of any marking periods within a single school year will be disenrolled from Basilica Middle School. This policy is based on quarter report card grades, not individual assignment grades.
Students finishing 8th grade with a GPA below 2.8 will be ineligible for enrollment at Basilica High School.

Attendance Policy

Students with more than 10 absences in a course will receive an NM (No Mark).
Families are responsible for the cost of credit recovery (typically $500 per course).
Failure to complete the required credit recovery will result in non-promotion.

Introducing the House System

We are excited to unveil a new middle school House System to build community, character, and school spirit. Every student will be assigned to a House, and throughout the year, Houses will earn points for academic achievement, behavior, service, and participation. This system promotes leadership, teamwork, and school pride in a fun, encouraging environment. The Houses with the most points at the end of each quarter—and again at the end of the year—will earn special recognition and privileges, celebrating their collective effort and success.

These enhancements affirm our belief that middle school is a formative time for building habits, values, and a strong academic foundation. These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to nurturing a learning environment grounded in Faith, Academic Excellence, Virtue, and Hard Work, while preparing students to thrive in high school and beyond.
