Hello Basilica School Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful break with your equally wonderful kids. The New Year is here, and we’re off and running. With the winter comes fundraising season. There are many fundraisers for the school in the near future, and the school parents are asked to bake and volunteer for these events. I hope that this “heads up” will help you prepare for a busy and fun segment of the year. (P.S. Watch for sales on brownie, cookie or cupcake mixes, too!)
- Saturday Jan 11 Knights of Columbus Italian Dinner 4:30 – 7pm. Please bake a dessert.
- Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus—especially our Snowbird Knights–the dinner draws a good crowd, especially after the 6 o’clock Mass. The menu features homemade Italian sausage, pasta, etc. All funds raised are for the school. Be advised that working families do not eat free—sorry, but it just isn’t feasible. Schedule for working this event, class by class, will be forthcoming.
- Saturday Feb 1 Rock‘n’Roast (afternoon and into the night) Bake LOTS of desserts!
- If you are new to the school, this is a real extravaganza and a lot of fun as well. It takes the whole school to pull it off and it is our largest fundraiser of the year.
Chef John Correa and a host of parents prepare a huge Cuban feast, roasting whole pigs Cuban style, chicken, roasted vegetables, beans & rice, and lots of desserts. Add live music, an incredible Silent Auction, and you have the recipe for a terrific event. It runs from the afternoon into the evening, so you can imagine what is entailed. Be sure to save some baking energy for this one. Of note is that parents of alumni still help coordinate and sponsor this event. Their generosity is amazing.

- Friday Fish Dinners for Lent (Ash Wed. is March 5) Bake or buy desserts.
- The Knights of Columbus fry and bake fish every Friday during Lent, and all proceeds benefit the school. Details will be forthcoming, but each class works a Friday, busing tables, selling 50/50 Raffle tickets, cleaning pots and pans, etc. The kids are a huge help at this one. Usually the school volunteers sign up to work from about 4-ish to 8. Clean up help is much appreciated by the Knights. It is busiest at the dinner hour, of course. Again, families cannot eat free but the cost is very reasonable. The Knights either catch the fish or purchase it, so it is easy to understand why they cannot feed us all for free as much as they might like to.
Stay tuned for Catholic Schools Week, January 26 – February 1. But for now I think this is enough to “digest.” If you do plan on bringing a dessert to any of these events, please sign up in the front office or drop an email to Mr. Wright at [email protected]. Thank you in anticipation for your wonderful cooperation.
